Cinnamon Toast Dipping Sticks

Cinnamon Toast Dipping Sticks serves: 2 (8 toast sticks plus 1/2 cup or 120 ml dipping sauce per serving)

Ingredients:

For the toast sticks:
  • 4 slices whole-wheat or gluten-free bread
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the dipping sauce:
  • 1/2 cup (122 g) unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) water
  • 1/4 cup (48 g) coconut sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp tapioca starch

Instructions:

  1. Read through recipe and put all ingredients in your work area before starting your prep.
  2. Preheat broiler to high if using a traditional oven. For a toaster oven, wait until ready to use before turning on.
  3. Use a sharp knife to cut the crusts off the bread, if desired, and slice each piece into 4 equal planks. Lightly brush with oil and sprinkle with salt. Place on a nonstick baking sheet or toaster oven tray, and broil or toast for 5 min, until golden and crisp all over.
  4. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, whisk together applesauce and water. In a small dish, combine coconut sugar, cinnamon and tapioca starch, stirring to incorporate, before adding to the saucepan. Cook over medium heat until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat and cool; chill, if desired.
  5. Serve toast sticks alongside dishes of dipping sauce, either warm or chilled.

Notes:

Recipe notes: Toast sticks can be replaced with pretzel sticks, sliced apples or broken ice cream cones for a fun snack.
Storage tip: Leftover dipping sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
